Beach Hotel ...our pick...Brought to you by the long-running German Bakery, this uberhip beachfront property has just a few rooms, though all are designed with minimalist flair and finished with smart arty touches. Throw in some bright orange/burgundy tones, bamboo window shutters, and the crown for "affordable Kovalam chic" is theirs for the taking. Best of all, the German Bakery" is right upstairs.

German Bakery/Waves ...In a swanky new location on an airy, unburnt orange balcony, this remains the most popular hang-out in town. Finger-licking pastries still take the pride of place on the menu,a s do a huge range of winning breakfasts, strong coffee and quiches. Nowaday's it is easy to spend the entire day relaxing here, with a varied selection of classy main courses featuring curries, seafood, tofu and pizzas taking you into your evening meal.

Fusion ...The funky eatery has an inventive menu where dishes from the East meet dishes from the West - and it seems like they get along pretty well. You can get regular Indian or Western Meals, but the fun part is trying their fusion options where the two cuisines collide to form yummy new taste combinations. Also serves French press coffee and herbal teas.

Rough Guide to Kerala, October 2007
recommends both waves / the german bakery and fusion restaurant & coffee bar as the "author's favourites"

waves / the german bakery ... this rooftop terrace, shaded by a high tiled canopy, functions as a laid-back cafe during the daytime, when you can rder light meals and snacks, German cakes and delicious freshly ground coffee. After sunset, its atmospheric designer lighting makes a great backdrop for more sophisticated cooking. Thai and Kerala seafood curries, lobster in vodka, fish steaks with sesame and coriander crust or steamed prawns with chili and coconut milk. For deserts, go for the Malabar fruit flambee...

fusion ... along with waves the funkiest place on Light House Beach, with three innovative menus (Eastern, Western and fusion) served on a first floor terrace overlooking the bay. Try the fish creole in orange vinaigrette with cumin potatoes...or home made tagliatelle and cilli pesto. They also have a fine selection of drinks, a hefty sound system playing Indo Western music and a toilet that has to be seen to be believed.
